The other kind of agent: when there's no chat window at all.
A walking-tour company checking its visibility in ChatGPT and Google is checking the wrong thing entirely for a growing share of its potential bookings, the ones arriving through an AI agent nobody ever sees typing a question.

Showing up somewhere assumes someone is looking
A walking-tour company has got into the habit of checking how it shows up when someone types a question into ChatGPT or asks Google about guided walks nearby. That's a reasonable habit for the kind of AI agent that has a chat window, a visible conversation someone's watching. It says nothing about a different, growing kind: an agent running quietly in the background, checking and booking on someone's behalf, with no chat window, no visible conversation, and nobody at the company ever seeing a question get typed.
Every visibility habit built so far, checking a search result, checking what an assistant says when asked, assumes a person is at the other end, reading an answer and deciding what to do with it. A background agent breaks that assumption completely. It doesn't read a results page. It doesn't have a conversation someone's watching. It checks the tour company's actual facts, availability, price, meeting point, against whatever it was told to look for, and either books or moves on, all without anything that looks like a visit, a search, or a query the company could have noticed.
A standing order at a bank moves money on schedule with nobody watching each transfer happen, because the bank was built from the ground up to handle that kind of instruction correctly without a person present. A background agent checking a walking tour's availability is acting on a standing instruction the same way, unwatched, and most tour companies' systems were never built with that kind of visitor in mind at all.
What "presence" means when there's nothing to be present in
For a chat-based agent, presence means being mentioned in a good answer. For a background agent, presence means something else entirely: being checkable at all, by something that isn't rendering a page, opening a chat window, or doing anything a person would recognise as browsing. A tour company invisible to this kind of check isn't losing a ranking position. It's simply not there at all, in a category of demand that never had a page to rank on in the first place.
The habits that catch this are different too
Checking how you show up in ChatGPT tells a tour company nothing about whether a background agent can complete a booking against its real calendar. The only way to know is to test it directly: have something check availability and try to book the way a background agent would, not the way a person typing a question would. Most businesses have never run this test, because it never occurred to them that a customer could arrive this way at all.
This is worth building for now, not once it's obvious
By the time a background agent's bookings are large enough to notice in the numbers, competitors who prepared early already have a settled advantage: connections and standing relationships this kind of agent already trusts, earned well before the demand became visible enough to chase.
Making a business checkable by exactly this kind of agent, not just visible to the ones with a chat window, is the layer Selfe adds underneath everything else, so presence doesn't depend on someone being there to notice it.
How would we even notice this kind of booking happening?
Look for bookings with no earlier browsing activity at all attached to them. That absence is the signal, not a specific number.
Is this the same as being invisible to search engines?
No, a business can rank well and still be entirely unchecked by this kind of agent, because the two are testing completely different things.
Personal agents and what changes when your customer's agent already knows them.
A ceramics studio investing in being found on every surface a shopper might browse has nothing to offer a customer whose personal AI agent already knows exactly what they want and isn't browsing anywhere at all.
What a standing agent checks that a one-off chat session never does.
A one-off chat session checks a business's facts once and moves on. A standing AI agent checks the same facts again next week, and the week after, which changes what "current" needs to mean.
Being found is not the same as being bought from.
This is the distinction the rest of this hub, and most of this site, keeps coming back to. Being found by an AI is real progress. It is not, on its own, a booking, a sale, or a reason to stop.
