# Can an agent actually buy from you?

> An agent does not need an identical journey to a person. It does need a clear way to establish the request, check the terms and reach the next action your business permits.

## In short

- Buying is a chain of permissions and confirmations, not a single click.
- A business can support agent-led discovery and quoting without delegating payment or final approval.
- The commercial test is whether the right request reaches the right system with its context intact.

The useful question is not whether an agent can press the same button as a customer. It is what the business is willing to let happen. That may be discovering an offer, checking a current condition, preparing a quote, holding a request for review or completing a transaction.

## Start with the action you permit

The useful question is not whether an agent can press the same button as a customer. It is what the business is willing to let happen. That may be discovering an offer, checking a current condition, preparing a quote, holding a request for review or completing a transaction.

Once that boundary is clear, the work becomes practical. Each permitted step needs an owner, the inputs it requires and a reliable outcome that the agent can understand.

## Make the request complete enough to answer

An agent-led request should carry the details that matter to the result. A generic enquiry is often too vague to price or confirm. A well-shaped request preserves the product, timing, quantity, customer need and the constraints already established.

That reduces the familiar loop in which a customer is sent to a form and asked to restate the conversation that brought them there.

## Separate progress from commitment

Many businesses should keep a human or customer decision before money moves. That is compatible with agentic commerce. An agent can do the useful work of narrowing options, gathering terms and creating a ready-to-review request without silently committing anyone to a purchase.

The important thing is that the boundary is explicit. The agent needs to know when it has a confirmed answer, when it has a quote and when it needs consent or a colleague to continue.

## Measure the hand-off

Run a real request through the route. Can the business identify what is being asked for? Does the next system receive enough context to act? Is the response specific, current and clear about what happens next?

If the answer is yes, an agent is already doing commercially useful work even if the final payment remains a human step.
